8/29.- Flanders: Ghent, the Three Towers
Ghent is another of the Flemish towns with a rich historical
and artistic
heritage. Saint Michael's Bridge ofers a remarkable view of
the Three
Towers: Saint Nicholas', the Belfry and Saint Bavon's. The
latter hosts
the famous retable The Adoration of the Mystical Lamb, most
of which has
been attributed to John Van Eyck. The painting represents no
less than 248
characters, including judges, pilgrims, hermits, knights and
martyrs.
Ghent is situated at the confluence of the Leye and Scheldt
rivers.
