Hangzhou, Lingyin Temple
This is one of the statues of Buddha in the
second pavilion. If you look
closely
you will see a glass ball
on his forehead, this is a symbol of supreme wisdom. The lotus
flower
that the
Buddha is sitting on symbolizes purity, since the lotus
floats over the dirty waters of the lakes. The long earlobes
symbolize longevity, and the hand gesture signifies wisdom and
strength.
Behind Buddha's head you see a nimbus that
symbolizes brightness. On this nimbus are the seven ancient
Buddhas that represent the seven human emotions: desire, fear,
melancholy, anger, hate, joy and love; and the seven gems: the
conch shell, coral, glaze, glass, agate, silver and gold.
