In this photo you can see a meat stand in the Gomhuiyya market.
Most of the meat for sale is beef and lamb. Remember that eating
pork is forbidden in the Muslim countries. Notice the hanging
head of the cow in the middle of the photo.
Although the Christian religion was officially adapted at the
end of the 4th century, the old pagan
religion had still many followers in Alexandria. The
Roman emperor Theodosius faced a popular revolt in 391 AD when
he ordered the destruction of the pagan temple
of SerApis in Alexandria. Soon after the last pagan leader
was killed, and the pagan religion disappeared from Alexandria.
During the following centuries the local Christian church, known
as the Coptic Church, was very
popular.
