24/41.- Alexandria, Midan Tahrir
We are now in one of the busiest squares in Alexandria: Midan
Tahrir. This square used to be known as the Square of
the Consuls in the 19th century because most foreign ambassadors
lived here. In 1873 a statue of Mohammed
Ali was placed at the center of the square (you can see
it on the right of the photo). From then on, the square was
known as Midan Mohammed Ali. In 1882 all buildings were
destroyed in a British air raid. From this square Nasser announced
the nationalization of the Suez Canal.
In the photo you can see how the absence of traffic lights
forces local citizens to cross the street wherever they can.
We will now visit an even more chaotic square: Midan Gomhuiyya.
