With Julius Ceasar death's, Roman senators split between supporters
of Mark Aurelius and Octavian. Cleopatra
supported Mark Aurelius when it became
evident that he would be elected. Soon after his election, they
became lovers. Roman citizens did not accept this relationship
either, specially when the concessions to Cleopatra began. Mark Aurelius gave her parts of the Roman empire: Tarsus, Cyrene, crete,
Cyprus, and Palestine.
Octavian did not miss this opportunity
to declare war on Cleopatra. Cleopatra
was defeated, and a year later Octavian claimed Egypt as a Roman
province. Mark Aurelius died in Cleopatra's arms and was buried
as a king. Cleopatra decided to kill herself in 30 BC, when
Octavian occupied Alexandria. This was the sad end for Egypt's
last pharaoh.
In the photo you can see a carpenter working in a street of Alexandria.
