21/41.- Alexandria, Anfushi street
In this photo you can see a street in this popular district. Not far from here sits one of the most visited monuments in
Alexandria: the Pompey's Pillar.
The Pompey's Pillar is an over
25 meters high granite pillar built in 297 AD in honor of emperor
Diocletian. The name of the monument comes from a mistake in
the middle ages, when travelers thought Pompey was buried here.
Although he fled to Egypt after a defeat against Julius Caesar
and he did die in Alexandria in 48 BC, he has nothing to do
with this pillar. Nearby this monument are three Sphinxes and
a subterranean gallery where sacred Apis bulls were buried.
