Menu

We arrive in Sanliurfa at noon, check in the hotel and then have lunch in a local restaurant where we have the Sanliurfa specialty Patlicani Kebab (eggplant kebab). After lunch we visit the center of the city, Balikli Gol, the pools with holy carp and trout seen in this picture. Sanliurfa known in the ancient times as Ur then as Edessa, is a fascinating city with a history of 13,500 years, which was enriched by different civilizations like Summer, Akkad, Babylon, Hittite, Arami, Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian, Roman and Byzantine. In the 11th century it was added to the Seljuk Empire and after Eyyubis, Memluks, Turcoman tribes, Timur state and Safevis, Urfa was added to the Ottoman Empire. Urfa was occupied in 1919 by the English, then by the French and liberated in 1920 by the militia of Urfa. In 1984 it received the title Sanli (glorious) and a statue dedicated to the city's heroism during the National Independence War.
