3/50.- Istanbul, Yeni Mosque

In this photo taken from Eminonu docks you can see Yeni Cami (the New Mosque) - a religious complex consisting of a mosque, madrasa (a religious school which did not survive to the present), a fountain, the sultan lodgings and a mausoleum; its construction lasted 66 years (1597-1663) and was conducted by three successive architects.

The sultan's pavilion displaying splendid Iznik tiles, paintings and furniture inlaid with ivory and mother of pearl was turned into a museum which opened in 1967. Today the area in front of the entrance steps harbors a dense population of pigeons, which eventually will take refuge on its domes and arches.
