Kinkaku-ji Temple is the most famous postcard view of Kyoto. The temple was originally built by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as his residence in 1397. After his death, it became a temple. The official name of this Zen temple is Rokuonji.
Kinkaku's main building is from 1955, after the old one was burnt by a fanatic monk. The Golden Pavilion is covered with gold leaf, and it houses relics of Buddha.
The view of Kinkaku-ji Temple from the pond is one of the most photographed among tourists in Kyoto.
The temple is accessed by bus and by subway (Kitaoji Station).
