Wallonia: Dinant: Rocher Bayard
According to a medieval epic poem, the four sons of Duke Aymes
of Dordogne
rode a giant horse, Bayard, on which they fled to escape the
wrath of
Emperor Charlemagne. Legend has it that during a short stay
of the four
sons on the banks of the Meuse river, their horse struck the
rock with one
of its hooves, thus giving birth to the sharp pointed needle-shaped
rock
which still bears its name. A narrow path between the cliff
and the rock
was progressively enlarged, to allow passage first to armies,
and today to
hordes of tourists.
