Flanders: Oostende, the Visserskaai
Oostende is one of the main Belgian seaside resorts along the
70-km Belgian
coast on the North Sea. It is linked to Brussels by the first
highway ever
built in Belgium, and which is chronically congested on week-ends.
The
visserskaai (Fishermen's Quay) runs from the railroad station
to the beach.
As the name suggests, fishing-boats dock here and sell their
seafood produce
on the busy quay, which is lined with seafood restaurants. A
little farther
Southwards, the Royal Family has its seaside villa. There is
also a casino
and a horse racing track.
