47/50.- Near Brussels, The Forêt de Soignes
Not far from the city centre starts the Forêt de Soignes,
a large wooded area, unfortunately crisscrossed by a few major
roads, but increasingly well protected and maintained. Much
of it is a large beech grove, but there are plenty of other
varieties, too. Early risers can, if they are lucky, view some
of the remaining wildlife. A walk in the forest is one of the
Brusselers’ popular week-end activities, often concluded
by a drink in one of the several renowned forest-edge resorts.
