6/35.- Avignon, Palais des Papes
Thanks to the prosperity the city underwent during the 14th century,
Avignon became one of the main Gothic architecture ensembles in Europe.
Nowadays Avignon definitely is The Gothic town in Europe.
In the photo you can see the Popes Palace; the most beautiful
and strongest mansion in the world according to Froissart. The building
was edified in two parts. The first part, more sober, was erected
by Benoit XII between 1334 and 1342. The second part was built between
1342 and 1352 by Clément VI.
Currently the building hosts a museum and an exhibitions hall.
The entrance to these halls is not cheap, but it is well worth the
money. One of the most interesting features of the Palace is the great
collections of frescoes. Painters from all Europe, most of them from
Sienna, came to Avignon to decorate its main rooms.
