5/35.- Avignon, Palais des Papes and
Cathedral
You can see here a beautiful view of the 'Place
du Palais' (=Palace Square). The building at the
right is the 'Palais des Papes'. The one at the
left is the Cathedral.
The construction of these buildings began in
1309, when Pope Clement V leaves Rome and chooses
Avignon as the capital of Christianity. For more
than a century the popes will live in Avignon.
Thanks to this, and to its privileged geographic
situation, the city became one of the wealthiest
cities in medieval Europe. Click on the picture to
