2.- Samarkand, Registan Square
The heart of ancient Samarkand is Registan Square (Registan means
"sandy place").
The square is fringed on three sides by the monumental structures
of the Ulugbek, Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kari madrasahs. Madrasah means
a religious school. Till the very end of the 19 century the square
served as a market place.
