27/50.- Kyoto, Nijo Castle

Menu

The Nijo Castle is another of the highlights of Kyoto. The castle is located in the center of Kyoto. In order to get here, you can take the Tozai Subway Line, and get off at Nijojo-mae Station.

The Nijo Castle was constructed in 1603 by the founder of the Edo Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Here is where he and his successors lived in Kyoto.

The complex consists mainly of two buildings, the Secondary Castle (Ninomaru) and the main Castle (Honmaru). The Ninomaru castle is famous for its nightingale floors, that sound like this bird when stepped on. The idea was that the sound of nightingales would work as a warning signal against intruders.

The Nijo Castle is another of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in Kyoto.
