40/46.- Beijing, the Great Wall

A popular legend says the Great Wall is the only human made construction visible from space. This is actually false, but the Great Wall is still one of the places that most amazed me.

The first parts of the Great Wall were constructed between 770 to 206 B.C.. 2000 years ago, emperor Qin Shihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history, ordered all the parts to be connected to make the Great Wall. Its main purpose was to protect China from tribes living in modern-day Mongolia and Manchuria. The Great Wall used to be almost 4,000 miles long. Currently some parts have completely disappeared. Locals used the stones to build their houses.
