The Harlem district was originally named "Nieuw Haarlem", after the Dutch city of Haarlem since the first Europeans to live here came from that country. In the 19th century, immigrants from Russia, Germany and Ireland came to Harlem. Later the Italians came. And it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Harlem became an Afro-American district.
Currently this is considered a rather dangerous area, but there are a couple of things tourists should visit: the still under construction Cathedral of St. John the Divine (one of the largest Gothic churches in America); and the Apollo Theater, a nightclub. Harlem is the home of jazz and blues in New York City.
