17/50.- Priory, mangrove

In this picture you can see mangrove trees. These trees are the only plants able to survive with their roots in salt water. They are vital for the protection of the coast. They retain the sediments and provide shelter for many sea species, shrimps and crabs among others.

The four mangrove species found in Jamaica are currently protected. The destruction of the mangroves is severely penalized.
