To move around Rio de Janeiro the best option is the taxi. Taxis are metered and safe; just make sure the taxi driver resets the taximeter when you start your ride.

Rio de Janeiro has a very good underground network. The metro is also considered safe. Local buses are the least safe option, and should be avoided. If you take one of the buses or metros, watch out for pickpockets.

The center can be visited on foot. When visiting the city you should leave your valuables, and the money you are not going to use, in your hotel's safe box.
