Moulay Ismail, a great grand father of today's king of Morocco
Mohamed Vi, was also famous for its victories in the battle
grounds. He regained all the territories that his predecessors
had lost, and even gained some new territories.
The Sultan Moulay Ismail was also famous for its role in the
slave trade. With the collaboration of Moroccan pirates, European
sailors were caught and brought to Mekenes to work for the Sultan.
Black Africans and Moroccans were also forced to work in this
city. Nowadays the sultan is revered as a national hero, though.
