Moulay Ismail, a great grand father of today's king of Morocco Mohamed VI, was also famous for his victories in the battle grounds. He regained all the territories that his predecessors had lost, and even gained some new territories.
The Sultan Moulay Ismail was also famous for its role in the slave trade. With the collaboration of Moroccan pirates, European sailors were caught and brought to Mekenes to work for the Sultan. Black Africans and Moroccans were also forced to work in this city. Nowadays the sultan is revered as a national hero, though.
