Other reasons why this city has received the attention of the world are the literature references. Many people would not have ever heard of Alexandria, if writers like Lawrence Durrell, Constantinos Cavafis, e.m. Foster and Stratis Tsirkas had not dedicated many pages to this city.

Lawrence Durrell is the most famous of them. Although Egyptians do not like the image he gave of Alexandria to his readers, he made this city famous world wide. His erotic and sensual stories have more to do with his own personality, than with the city itself. Most of his characters are foreigners, because most of his friends belonged to the expatriate community.
