This photo was also taken at the street market in Gomhuiyya
square. Notice how there is almost no space for the tramway.
But tramways do pass on the rails at both sides of the image.
Let's learn something else about the history of this city.
On July the 1st 1789, Napoleon Bonaparte
conquered Alexandria. He found a small fishing village, nothing
to do with the second biggest city on earth that once was Alexandria.
The French domination would not last long, because in 1799 the
British defeated the French at Abou-qir. After a decade of confrontations
between the Ottomans and the Mamelouks,
the British conquered the city.
