29/36.- Abu Simbel, the temple
To save the temples, the top of the cliff was dug away and both
temples were completely disassembled. Then the more than 16,000 blocks
were reassembled on its current location. To complete the work, an
artificial hill was built over the reconstructed temples. In the photo
you can see the result of this amazing project. Some years later,
in 1979, Abu Simbel, Philae, and other nearby monuments were collectively
designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
