Let’s learn something else about this city's history. In 1918 the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy collapses and the Republic of Austria is founded. In 1934 a civil war between the conservatives and social democrats takes place. And in 1938 the Nazi troops invade Austria. During the Nazi occupation more than 100,000 Austrians were killed in the concentration camps, and many others were forced to flee. On April 27th 1945, Austria’s independence is re-established. Vienna was divided in four administration sectors: American, British, French and Russian.
