24/50.- Ieud, fresco of Saint Christopher

Menu

The interior of the Church was painted by Alexandru Ponehalski around 1782 and the paintings are considered the best preserved mural paintings in Maramures. This is the artist's work of maturity mastering the tradition of Byzantine art and combining the spontaneity of folk art with western baroque influences shown in the richly decorated icons and the variety of ornamental motifs. On the interior of the door there is the painting of Saint Christopher the patron of travelers carrying child Jesus on his shoulder. The paintings were made on pieces of textile that were treated with a preparatory layer of lime wash and were then stuck to the wooden logs. The inscriptions are in Romanian written with Cyrillic letters.
