23/50.- Ieud-On the Hill wooden church (1364)

Dedicated to The Birth of Virgin Mary the church in Ieud on the Hill was built by local masters In 1364 being the oldest wooden church in Maramures and Romania, now a Unesco Monument. Made of fir wood it is small in size and austere in architectural style yet remarkable for its elegant shape. It is designed consisting of pronaos, nave and altar. Above the pronaos rises the solid square tower with a square balcony and a tall conical spire. In the pronaos the stairs(shown in the picture) leading to the tower are carved out of one piece of wood and are of the same age as the church. In the attic of this church it was found in 1925 an old Codex dating from 1391-1392, considered to be the oldest writing in Romanian language with Cyrillic letters. This document can be seen at the Library of the Romanian Academy in Bucharest.
