4/49.- Algarve, Lagos, Caravel


Caravels, the ship developed by Henry the Navigator to facilitate crossing the ocean towards the Americas, are a recurrent element in Algarvean art and decoration, and not a few Portuguese restaurants here and elsewhere are called Caravela.

This photograph shows a caravel painted on azulejos, the white tiles painted in blue (and sometimes a few other colours as well) typical of Portugal, and which decorate buildings both on the inside and the outside.
