The city of Lagos is situated towards the West of the Algarvean coast, in a site which has so far kept it off the beaten tourist track. Although tourism is, of course, one of its main resources, the city has been able to maintain its own character and atmosphere.
A canal (actually the estuary of the Bensafrim River) leads towards a harbour and a modern, well-equipped marina. On one side of the canal lies the city; on the other, a region of protected dunes and a large beach ; and only beyond that, a series of large housing projects like so many others.
