On the island of Gozo, at Xagra, Ggantija megalithic temples stand against the sky like stone giants. They were built around 3600 BC, earlier than the first Egyptian pyramids (2800 BC) and England's Stonehenge (2400 BC). The legend tells of a giant Sansuna who carried these large megaliths, each weighing several tones, on her head from a distant village of the island.
The most famous place of pilgrimage for the catholics of the islands is Gozo's Ta' Pinu church, close to the village of Gharb. The legend of its origins was enriched by later beliefs of many miracles and acts of grace. After a car ride in the country side, seeing Ta 'Pinu with its Romanesque tower and superb simplicity standing in the open country touched me in a special way: as if the Gozitans through their faith reaffirmed the triumph of man made beauty and love for their island otherwise arid and inhospitable.
