22/25.- Nara, Kasuga Shrine detail

Menu

In this picture you can see a detail of the roof of the Kasuga Shrine.

During the latter half of the Heian period (8th-12th century), Kasuga Shinto Shrine was united with Kofukuji Buddhist Temple. This interfaith alliance lasted until the Meiji restoration (late 19th century), when Shinto became the state religion, and it was officially separated from Buddhism.

Following a Shinto tradition, shrines were destroyed and rebuilt every 20 years in order to purify the place. The last time the Kasuga Shrine was rebuilt was in 1893.
