14/22.- Wallonia: Canal du Centre: Strepy Thieu Boat Lift

When the canal was redesigned in 1957 to meet new European standards, an impressive new boat lift was built to allow boats and barges to cross a nearly 75-m difference in level in 6 or 7 minutes. Here, two basins, each with their own counterweight supported by cables, can operate separately.
