The guided tour of ancient Ephesus includes a visit of the House of Virgin Mary. It is believed that Virgin Mary accompanied by St. John the Evangelist came to Ephesus towards the end of her life. The House of Virgin Mary, located on top of Bulbul mountain, 9 km ahead of Selcuk, in a Roman architectural style was enlarged with a church in the 4th century and restored in 1940. Only two rooms are open to the public. The place has been declared by Pope John-Paul II a pilgrimage place for Christians, but also Muslims visit it.
