14/42.- Rome, Piazza del
Popolo
The 'Piazza del Popolo' was the traditional northern entrance
to the city. The obelisk you see in the photo was brought from the
Massimo Circus following the desires of Sixtus V.
On the north side of the 'Piazza del Popolo' (= Peoples
Square) the small Church of 'Santa Maria del Populo' contains two
wonderful canvases by Caravaggio: the "Conversion of Saint Paul" and
"The Crucifixion of Saint Peter", among other works.
