When the Romans left, the Hill of Fourviere was abandoned. Till
the 16th century it was mainly used to cultivate vineyards. At the
beginning of this century, many religious communities settled on the
hill. For this reason the hill was also known as the "Praying
Hill".
The Basilica of 'Notre Dame de la Fourviere' mixes Greek, Gothic,
Byzantine, Neoclassic and many other influences. The church is very
beautiful, especially its facade. But the best part is behind its
