Cesky Krumlov used to be a very small town. The expansion of the city began when the Lords of Rozmberk replaced the Vitkovitz family in 1302. During this period the town experienced an economic boom; new churches, monasteries and buildings were constructed, and new laws allowed the constitution of new markets, handicrafts and the trade with other cities. The citys social and cultural life also underwent an expansion period during the Rozmberks dynasty. This came to an end in 1601, when Peter Vok had to sell the Cesky Krumlov estate to Emperor Rudolph II.
