Our tour of Umbria ends in Assisi, the town of Saint Francis. As in many other places attracting pilgrims as well as tourists, the tourist business has boomed, and the cult of the fast buck (or Euro) out of the tourists’ pockets seems to have replaced much of the original religious fervour. But the town, built on the ridge of the Subasio Mountain, has been able to maintain some of its original character all the same, and some religious institutions and foundations still host pilgrims and retreats.
