44/50.- Umbria, Todi

Menu

Todi is another ancient mountaintop town, visible from a distance, and commanding a sweeping view of the surrounding valleys and fertile countryside. This town, like others in the region, bears traces witnessing to its distant Etruscan and Roman past, but much of the architecture visible today dates back to the Middle Ages. Walking up to the Piazza del Popolo (picture 46) through its narrow streets (automobile traffic is limited and often impossible) one may without too much difficulty imagine what they must have looked (and smelt) like five or six centuries ago.
