Pont du Gard (1)
The Pont du Gard is part of a clever network of canals whereby the Romans
provided water for the cities both in Italy and in their colonies. Robert
Harris's novel "Pompeii" is as much about this skill as about the
destruction of the town. The bridge across the Gard river is in a
remarkable state of conservation attesting to the solidity of Roman
architecture.
