The fortress was besieged in the 12th century during a conflict with
Barcelona over ownership rights over Provence, and was eventually forced to
surrender. The 14th-century Raymond of Turenne sparked a civil war. One of
the favorite pastimes of this nobleman was to force his prisoners to jump
off the cliff seen on the right into the void.
