3/43.- Florence, The Duomo,
facade 1
The construction of
this cathedral began in 1296, its original layout was
designed by the architect Arnolfo di Cambio. In 1334
Giotto continued the works, and a few years later
Francesco Talenti and Lapo Ghini finished the cathedral.
In 1436 Filippo Brunelleschi added the famous
dome.
The original facade was demolished in 1587 (we dont know
the reason), and the sculptures that decorated it were brought to
the "Museo dellOpera del Duomo". The facade you are looking
at is a work of 1887, when de Fabris tried to imitate the original
one.
