2/43.- Florence, The
Duomo
The Cathedral was built in front of the old Battistero (at your
left), The date of the construction of the Battistero is still an
enigma --probably it is a work of the 4th or 5th century. The interior
inspired Dantes inferno (Hell). Florentine Artists competed
to execute the baptisterys famous bronze doors. Ghiberti completed
his works in 1425 (after Brunelleschi left his project), and short
after he received the commission to complete the last set of doors,
the works took him more than 28 years. Specially famous are the "Gates
of Paradise".
The tower you can see next to the Cathedral is called the "Campanile"
and it is 82 meter high. Climbing to the top of this tower will allow
you to enjoy a wonderful landscape view of the city.
