29/29.- Flanders: Pajottenland
Towards the west of Brussels, the fertile Pajottenland region
has for
centuries provided Brussels not only with meat and vegetables
but also with
workers and merchants. Today the area is popular with wealthy
Flemish
people, but has been able to maintain some of its rural charm.
The
countryside is reminiscent of the scenes in many Flemish paintings,
from
Brueghel to the more modern School of Lathem.
This is only the temporary end of our visit to Flanders.
In due course, we
shall be visiting many other towns and sites, but even though
Belgium is a
small country, it takes time and travel to visit and photograph
all the
interesting sights. So please be patient: the virtual visit
will be
completed within a year or so. Friends in Belgium are welcome
to send
suggestions, amendments and corrections.
