It is time to learn some Hungarian, don’t you think? This is something I should have done before departing, unfortunately I didn’t do it. Although many young people speak English or German, most of the population only speak Hungarian. Here there are some words you should remember:

• Hello/Good Bye = Jó napot/Szia
• Yes/no = Igen/Nem
• Please = Kérem
• Thank you = Köszönöm
• Excuse me = Elnézést!
• Good morning = Jó reggelt
• today = ma
• I don’t understand = Nem értem
• Do you speak English/German? = Beszél angolul/németül?

Looks complicated? Yes, I know. Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language, like Finnish and Estonian.
