ETA (Euskadi ta Askatasuna, Freedom for the Basque Country), the Basque liberation army, has made the Basque Country famous worldwide. Although ETA declared a cease fire following the steps of the IRA in 1998, in December 1999 the cease fire came to an end because of the intransigence of the Spanish government. Since then, several terrorist attacks have taken place both inside and outside of the Basque Country. In my opinion there's no danger while traveling in this area. If you have the chance, you should come to Bilbao. It is considered one of the safest cities in Europe.

ETA was born during Franco's Fascist dictatorship in Spain (1939-75), as a result of the repression of the Basque symbols and culture. ETA followers still think the only way to get the independence of Euskadi (the Basque Country) is with guns. I just hope they will soon reconsider their position, and use the "arms" of democracy, instead.
