The country of the Basques straddles the border between France and Spain along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. One of the most distinctive traits of the Basque Country is the language. Although the Basque language (Euskera) is only spoken by half a million people, Euskera is recovering rapidly after decades of repression. Nowadays the main language used in many schools is Basque. These schools are called Ikastolas. Many young people are learning this language. Although the Basque language has some commonalties with European and African tongues, the origin of the language is still unknown.
