13.- Samarkand, Hazrat Hizr Mosque

Our next sight is Hazrat Hizr mosque. It was built in the 18th century on the entry to Samarkand. Hazrat Hizr (Saint Hizr) is believed to protect travelers. One can find trees around the mosque with a lot of pieces of close as a sign of sacrifice. In a matter of fact it is situated on Afrosiab mount - place where old Samarkand (in Greek sources called Marakanda) was situated before it has been completely destroyed by Chengiz-Khan.
