Southeast of Shimogamo-jinja shrine, north east of Kyoto, is the Ginkaku-ji Temple, or Silver Pavilion.
Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa originally built his villa at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountain at the end of the 15th century. A few years later, the Silver Pavilion was built. The villa was converted into a Zen temple after the shogun's death in 1490.
In Ginkaku-ji temple complex there is a beautiful Zen garden you should not miss.
