Suzhou, Pan Men Gate
Pan Men Gate is probably the most important historic highlight in the park. The gate, and
attached section of the wall, date to 1351 and are the only remains of the city's ancient
fortifications. Pan Men is famous for being the only land and water gate in China, i.e., one with
separate portcullises that guard both the land and water routes into the city. It's certainly large
and impressive-looking, though not as massive as the city gates you can see in Beijing and Xian.
From the top of the gate, there's a nice view of Wumen Bridge, a very high, arched, stone bridge
spanning the Grand Canal.
