7/43.- Shanghai, the Bund
The Bund is the area in Puxi on the banks of
the
Huangpu
River, along Zhongshan Road. The term Bund is an
Anglo-Indian word that describes a muddy waterfront.
The Bund is one of the most famous places throughout
China. Along this promenade you can see several buildings from
the first part of the 20th century. Most of the buildings have
a clear European influence. They are the fingerprint of the
colonial times, back in the 1930's, when Shanghai was the business
center of pre-communist China.
And just
opposite
of the Bund you have the
modern side of today's Shanghai, the financial district of Pudong,
with its wonderful skyline.
